Are you in need of relationship advice?
If so, this is why:
You, I and everybody else come with ‘baggage’ from our past. The voices and memories of our parents, teachers, siblings and friends reside in our hearts, ring in our ears and form the silent majority in our unconscious minds. We are happy, unhappy or somewhere in between based on the effects – and our interpretations – of all that has happened.
The challenge of overcoming relationship problems
We have been on a ‘journey’. During that journey we – perhaps not literally, but certainly figuratively – experienced natural disasters, traversed dangerous territory, fought bullies and mighty armies… as well as enjoyed the celebrations and exhilarations of achieving our goals.
I dislike the word ‘baggage’ here, with that slightly negative connotation, and would rather replace it with ‘hold-all’. What do you think?
That hold-all contains the riches of your innate resources, shiny new keep-sakes, skills, knowledge and a uniqueness that makes you like no other.
That hold-all also contains stuff that no longer serves you and stops you reaching your goals, becoming happy and even achieving marital bliss. There’s no need to judge it though – it is what it is.
The contents of your hold-all determine to a great extent how you shape your relationships, and most importantly your relationship with your partner or spouse – good or bad, happy or unhappy.
I really want to reassure you that there is no shame in struggling to make your long-term relationship or marriage work!
