Conversation Starters for First Dates

Some people find it easy to start a conversation, even with a stranger; but not everyone finds it so easy. They may say silence is a virtue, but whoever said it first obviously never sat through an awkward date.
While money, politics or religion should probably be avoided early in relationships, that still leaves plenty to talk about, and a good conversation can last hours.
Remember that most good conversations start with an open-ended question – you don’t want a grunted “yes” or “no” in response. The person answering should at least be able to reply with a full sentence.
Good conversation starters might sound something like this:
  • You look really nice, where did you get (item in question) from?
  • Have you seen any movies recently? How did you like it/them?
  • What kind of music do you listen to/ are interested in?
  • What sports do you play or like? How long have you played for?
  • What kind of foods do you like?
  • Have you read any good books lately? Was it interesting?
  • What’s one place you haven’t travelled to yet that you really want to go?
You might, as well as the money-politics-religion stuff, want to steer clear of family matters and work in the early days as well – you could find yourself getting very personal very quickly, so you should play those ones by ear. Obviously don’t go on about your ex-boyfriends or -girlfriends too much.
Start with the easy lead questions and conversation should start to flow. If you still have unanswered queries then wait and leave this for date No2…
